I would like to find the illustrations that George du Maurier did for Gaskell's works, starting with The Grey Woman. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

12 【Origin of middle name CLEGHORN】
★ 2008/05/15(Thu)
Hi,
Could anyone tell me whether it is known where Elizabeth GASKELL's middle name of CLEGHORN originates from. I have Scottish ancestors with that surname, and I was wondering whether someone with that name married into her family...
Very best wishes, Keith

Hi! I am reading North and South with my book club. All of us are having a difficult time understanding why her father felt he had to leave the church. Any thoughts that could help us?

10 【Cranford...autobiographical? 】
★ 2007/12/08(Sat)
I just read Cranford, and absolutely adored it! I know that it was based on the Knutford, the village where Elizabeth Gaskell was raised for many years.
I was wondering, though, specifically about the character of Peter Jenkyns. I read that Elizabeth Gaskell had a brother who disappeared in India. I was wondering if anyone knows how much of the character was based on her brother.

★ 2007/05/12(Sat)
Elizabeth Gaskell has to be one of the most underrated writers in world literature.
I was very impressed with Mary Barton, a must read for all. The book made me sympathize immensely with the workers of mid-nineteeth century England.

Hello there,
I am the editor of the Knutsford Guardian in Cheshire, England. I am writing an article for next week's paper about the appeal of Elizabeth Gaskell. If there is anyone out there who would be willing to explain why they find her works so fascinating, I would be delighted to hear from them. Many thanks.

5 【North and South classic movie】
★ 2007/01/04(Thu)
I have read Gaskell's books and she is one of my favorite authors. I watched a movie a long time ago on TV that was her North and South. I have searched the Internet, but cannot find any information on it. Does anyone know if the title is North and South or who the actors were. I would like to get a copy and I find nothing when I search on North and South. It was probably made in the 1940s. I know there is a new one, but I liked the older version.

Hi Bonny, the term `clemming'is a Northern slang meaning to `starve' i.e. to `clem'.

I recommended North & South to my bookclub after I saw the BBC movie by the same name. I enjoyed reading the book and found that the movie was very faithful, but I am wondering what "clemming" means?

2 【Gaskell Family History】
★ 2006/10/04(Wed)
My name is Scott Westbrook and I'm interested in following the Gaskell Family history. My Grandmother, Ethel Giddings, is originally a Gaskell from Bristol. If anyone has any information of that branch of the family to share, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks you in advance,
Scott Westbrook

1 【defintions】
★ 2006/09/07(Thu)
can anybody tell me the definition of "bard", when Mrs. Gaskell writes in "Ruth": “a bard struggle for existence” + “staring as bard as he could"??
and does it mean, when Miss Munro in "A Dark Night's Work" announces "so I don't see any reason he had to come calling, and P. P. C.-ing..." What is PPC'ing?
