39 【Dickens music】

★ 2009/12/24(Thu)

I am wondering.... what was the first piece of sheet music that Dickens published? Could it be the Pickwick Quadrilles? I also have a curiosity which I wonder if anyone has seen. It's called a Christmas Carol by Boz and the song is copyrighted in 1838, five years before the novel is published. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

38 【Cat's Meat Man Song 】

★ 2009/12/08(Tue)

Long ago, I heard sung, a song that supposedly was sung by Charles Dickens. It was called 'The Cat's Meat Man'. I have searched for the lyrics for some weeks and have only found references to the same. I read that it was sung before dinner at the Dickens Society Symposium in 2007. I would truly appreciate anyone who can aid me in finding the so far, illusive words to this song sung by Dickens.

Can someone tell me where Trollope says of Dickens, "If ever any man was a radical, he was." I think it was an obituary notice. Thank you.

34 【Charles Dickens "A Visit to the Spirits"】

★ 2009/04/01(Wed)

I have a 1860 Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post with an article in it by Charles Dickens under the title "A Visit to the Spirits". I've not been able to find any reference to such on the internet, and was wondering if anyone had ever come across this story before. It's an account of the author and some of his friends when they pay a visit to two mediums, one young and one old, and participate in a group seance.

The article is about 2000 or so words long, and is very descriptive of the author's perceptions of both the seance and the gullible reactions of those who seemed to believe the obvious shenanigans of the fake spirit readers.

The first paragraph of the story reads as thus:

I, the writer of this article, have seen something of the spirit doings, and I will state candidly what I have seen, and what I have thought. I do not affect infallibility; but I believe I am unprejudiced, and I know I love the truth.

Thanks for any information you might have about this Dickens Story.

32 【Dickens' punctuation】

★ 2009/01/13(Tue)

I think the problem with Dickens' punctuation was not knowledge (or lack of it) on his part, but simply that punctuation had not been standardized yet.

Spelling is a similar topic. Remember in Shakespeare's time there were something like 40 different spellings
of his name. It wasn't until the wide acceptance and use of dictionaries in the 19th century, that common spellings were finally decided upon.

Since it took that long for spelling to standardize, I would imagine punctuation would have taken even longer.
Even in the early 20th century there are some different modes of punctuation from what we see today. So I think this
is what accounts for the discrepancies in different editions. Some editors left the punctuation alone; but others modernized it.

30 【Dickens' punctuation】

★ 2008/12/16(Tue)

I am very puzzled about the punctuation in some editions of Dickens' works. In particular, some editions of Oliver Twist show a very unusual use of semi-colons and colons. In other editions all these examples have been corrected. My own theory is that when Dickens wrote his early books, he did not have a good grasp of punctuation, but improved as he progressed. I can't think of any other explanation, so perhaps someone could enlighten me

★ 2008/11/07(Fri)

My mother has just told me that Charles Dickens may be an ancestor of mine. She says that her mother's mother (my grandmother, born in 1902 and still alive) was a Miss Dickens. How can I find out the names of Dickens' grandchildren and whom they married?

I ask this question totally out of self-curiosity. Can anyone tell me why Dickens' mother didn't want him to leave the job in Warrens Blacking factory even when his father was released from prison and wanted him to go to school?

Perhaps it was because she knew that the family would always need money because her husband would never earn enough to pay for their extravagance.

I have an etching that is signed by Charles Dickens. It is of Kenneworth Castle. This was purchased years ago by a family member and was left to me. Can you tell me something about it. It is beginning to yellow with age and I believe if this is valuable to someone who is a collector, I would be willing to sell, only because I'm afraid of it deterioting.

Hi lulu, I don't know whether I can clear your confusion but as far as I know Dickens' father only married once. He married Elizabeth Barrow and had a family of 8 children. Dickens was their 2nd child.
